This inaugural Global Startup Youth (GSY) was conceptualized by Dash Dhakshinamoorthy, entrepreneur and Founder of StartupMalaysia.org and organised in collaboration with partners around the world such the US State Department, YouNoodleInc., UPGlobal, Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd, Global Entrepreneurship Week, Startup Nations and the Ministry of Finance, Malaysia to harness the innovative power of youth, their cultural diversity and their domain expertise to solve some of the world’s pressing problems.

The GSY is a 3 day action packed, high intensity, challenging yet fun filled, ‘get stuff done’ boot camp. Using the Lean startup methodology, youth from various countries will form teams to work around the clock to ideate and launch new projects that will hopefully evolve into ventures that are globally sustainable. Global experts in innovation, designers, startup leaders and leading grassroot entrepreneurship players will join as global mentors to help youth build apps and solutions to real world problems in the areas of Health, Education, Environment and Women’s Empowerment. The winning ventures will showcase their prototype to world leaders.

“This is a great opportunity to turn ideas into practical solutions that can solve the world’s problems. As a public health enthusiast passionate about the environment and mobile health, I’ll be working on how mobile health can solve the problem of immunization in
Africa, as well as how we can solve the global food crisis through the sensible use of wasted
food” says Dr Charles.

The race for a spot at the GSY amongst global youth was certainly a hard-fought one, with overwhelming response received. When applications closed for international participants as at 31 August, over 1,000 youth from more than 100 countries had applied for a spot at this landmark event. Out of this pool of talented youth, only 250 from approximately 90 countries were carefully selected by a panel of global judges. This international contingent will be joined by another 250 youth from Malaysia.

All selected participants will be provided with scholarships that cover travel, accommodation and program participation by the Malaysian government. They will also attend the GES after the GSY and meet close to 3,000 entrepreneurs from around the world.

The GSY is a side event of the upcoming 4th Global Entrepreneurship Summit (GES) (www.geskualalumpur2013.org) both of which will take place in October 2013. President Obama of the United States is currently scheduled to deliver the keynote address at the GES.

The GSY offers its participants an incredible opportunity to network and build deep connections not only with youth around the world but other entrepreneurs, startup mentors and youth leaders.
