President, Goodluck Jonathan, has promised a cash prize of N3m to Nigerian queen track, Blessing Okagbare and N3.5m to her coach, Daniel Esebinimo, following the athlete’s laudable performance at the last IAAF World Championship in Athletics in Moscow, Russia.
President Goodluck has also announced that national honours will be conferred on Okagbare and her coach during the next award ceremony.
Okagbare won two medals in Moscow which were also the only medals won by team Nigeria at the event.
The sport-loving President used the opportunity to warn Nigerian athletes that Nigeria will no longer tolerate that athletes come from the Olympics Games without a single medal as was the case last year in London.
“We have taken a decision that in the next Olympics, we must get medals, gold medals. In the last Olympics, that we could not get any medal, except the Paralympics that we were able to shine, was a bad story.
“We have challenged the Ministry of Sports and of course, the Finance Ministry to do all what it can to make sure that we support that sector so that our young men and women will do our country proud. So Blessing, we congratulate you. We thank you for this uncommon success and the uncommon dedication to our fatherland,” Goodluck said.
